I went to see this film the night it came out and intended to get this post up soon after, but here I am, a month later, posting this.
I'm one of those people who loves watching movie adaptations of books. However, I'm also one of those people who gets extremely annoyed when the film doesn't stay true to the book. Can you relate?
I was super excited to see 'Me Before You' after reading the book, but honestly, I was scared that it wouldn't live up to the book and be a complete disaster. I was wrong to be scared though - it was great!
First of all, the casting was brilliant! I couldn't have picked a better cast to play the characters; Emilia Clark and Sam Claflin (such a beautiful man!) were perfect in the roles of Louisa and Will, and they were basically how I imagined the characters to be in my head. They made me love the characters even more than I already did. The only thing was, in the book, the character of Patrick was, to put it bluntly, a lot more of a dick than he was in the film and he annoyed me a lot more throughout the book. I can forgive them for that though as his character added a lot of comedic elements to the film and Matthew Lewis portrayed his arrogance and jealousy well while making it humorous at the same time.
Also, the film stayed very (although not entirely) true to the book. I understand not every little detail from books can be put into films, otherwise they'd run on for hours, but they did ignore an entire character (Will's sister)... I was pleased with how true they stayed to the book though, only missing out a few minor details and using lots of direct quotes from the book! What more could I ask for? It's probably one of the best film adaptations of a book I've seen!
Another aspect of the film that I have to rave about is the soundtrack. It includes songs by Ed Sheeran, The 1975 and Imagine Dragons which fit with the story-line perfectly and help to elicit the emotions that the filmmaker wants us to feel, such as happiness and unfortunately sadness.
Just like the book, the film had me laughing, smiling and crying in the cinema! Yes, I cried in the cinema. I honestly had tears in my eyes from the first mention of those ridiculous bumblebee tights.
I would definitely recommend seeing it, but I also recommend reading the book (which you can read my review of here) before seeing the film as I always find it better to imagine everything yourself first. But that's just me.
Have you seen the film or read the book? What did you think?
